Apple’s smartwatch is a brilliant, fast, waterproof and include GPS. We compared it with the Samsung Gear S3, its best bet so far.
The Apple Watch Series 2 looks a lot like the original Apple Watch. It remains a square device that can tell the time, display notifications and monitor the exercise.
But there are some great additions, including integrated GPS for more accurate distance and measurement of steps, a waterproof casing so you can swim with it, a brighter and faster screen thanks to the new Apple S2 chip.
The Samsung Gear S3, one of the best smartwatches we saw in the IFA, is the most natural rival for the Apple Watch Series 2. Let’s compare them.
Design and display
With the Apple Watch Series 2, the changes are mostly internal. It looks almost the same as the original, although Apple add a ceramic shell option in addition to aluminum and stainless steel; Apple says that the ceramic case is four times more durable than steel. The Series 2 is also the same size as its predecessor; either in the 38 mm version (1.5 x 1.3 x 0.4 “) or 42 mm (1.7” x 1.4 “x 0.4”).
The Samsung Gear S3, a comparison, is bigger than both. With 1.8 x 1.8 x 0.5 “(HWD), it is more voluminous and, with a circular shape, it seems more traditional than the Apple watch. There are two models, classic and frontier, the difference is physical: the classic is silver, while the Frontier is black.
The way to interact with each watch is similar. The Apple Watch uses a physical shell-side crown that you turn to select applications; the Gear S3 has a bezel that also rotates. Both are great alternatives to tedious slides that can clog the screen, but you can also press the interfaces of both.
The Gear S3 has a Super AMOLED screen of 1.3 “, 360 x 360 pixels, with Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ for better resistance to scratches. It is always on, so when you are not using it like a smartwatch you can see the time. The Apple Watch Series 2 has a brighter OLED Retina display as bright as the first Apple Watch at 1,000 nits with sapphire crystal coverage or Ion-X glass, depending on your choice. the resolution is like the original Apple Watch; 272 x 340 pixels for the 38 mm model and 312 x 390 pixels for the 42 mm one, using the same pressure-sensitive Force Touch screen that keeps several options when pressing the toughest screen. Both has ambient light sensors.
You can customize the straps on each watch with silicone, leather and bracelets from popular designers. Any 22mm strap can be used with the Samsung Gear S3, while Apple Watch requires specialized bands.
In terms of durability, the Gear S3 is an outdoor watch, with a military rating that protects it at high and low temperatures, and can survive dust, shock and vibration. There is a big difference in water resistance. The Gear S3 is rated IP68, so it can survive underwater at 1.5m for 30 minutes, but is not useful for swimming or diving. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 2 is water resistant up to 50 meters, and can monitor rhythm statistics, including calories burned, distances traveled, pace and strokes. Not only that; use the watch’s built-in speaker to eject water that could get into the housing. Apple warns that it should not be used for water diving, although it could be a great choice for swimmers.
The battery is in the air for the Gear S3. Samsung is opting for a four-day battery with the screen on and off and both days if it is always on. With 18 hours, the battery of the Apple Watch Series 2 is the same as in the original. Both use charging bases.
The Apple Watch Series 2 will launch with watchOS 3, which comes with several updates such as more covers, the ability to write on the screen to send messages and SOS functionality to alert your emergency contacts of your location. The Samsung Gear S3 can do all this. What you can not do is run Pokémon Go, which will be available on the Apple Watch at the end of the year.
Like the Gear S2, the Gear S3 runs with the Tizen OS. Although Samsung says there will be more than 10,000 apps available at launch, the support for apps is not as strong as Apple’s.
Both watches are faster than their previous versions. The Apple Watch Series 2 has a new S2 dual-core processor that the apple says is twice as fast as the A1 of the first Watch, with a CPU that will deliver 50% faster performance. Apple says to wait 60 fps in some apps.
Meanwhile, the Gear S3 has a dual-core 1GHz processor with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. You can synchronize a pair of Bluetooth headsets to listen to MP3s that you upload or Spotify streaming with a model with LTE. There is no Apple Watch with LTE yet.
As for the sensors, the Gear S3 has integrated GPS, an accelerometer, gyroscope and cardiac monitor – basically, everything that the Samsung Gear Fit2 has, along with an altimeter, barometer, integrated speaker and microphone. The Apple Watch Series 2 has an accelerometer, integrated GPS (which Apple says is instant), gyroscope and cardiac monitor. Both are good choices for athletes and runners, so you should expect monitoring of calories, steps, distances and all the usual activities and meters with both clocks. Although, the Apple Watch Series 2 seems the right choice for swimmers, especially since it can monitor indoor and outdoor swimming.
You can pay for goods with both watches without having to take out the wallet. Apple Watch uses Apple Pay, while Samsung Gear has Samsung Pay. The advantage in the Gear S3 is that, since it has support for Magnetic Secure Transmission, it can be used with any device that reads a credit card.
Price and availability
The Samsung Gear S3 in Classic and Frontier versions will come in editions with Wi-Fi or LTE on a date and with no fixed price. But if Samsung follows the route of the Gear S2, the Gear S3 will cost $ 299.
The Apple Watch Series 2 comes in 38mm and 42mm sizes, just like the original Apple Watch. Along with a special version of Nike +, they will have prices of $ 369, while the existing Apple Watch (now known as Series 1) will get a processor update and a price drop of $ 269. You can order Series 1 or 2 in presale before September 16. Apple Watch Nike + will arrive next month.
The Samsung Gear S3 and the Apple Watch Series 2 seem to be the best smartwatches we’ve seen in a long time, with integrated GPS, cardiac monitor and other sensors to ensure worthwhile exercise monitoring, as well as attractive and intuitive designs that will look good on your wrist. It is already a matter of personal preference for each one.
